California residents pay both federal income tax and one of the highest state income taxes in the country. This California tax calculator combines both into a single estimate, so you can see your total tax bill, combined effective rate, and take-home income in one place.

California's Nine-Bracket System

Unlike the federal system's seven brackets, California uses nine progressive brackets for the 2025 tax year, starting at 1% and topping out at 12.3% for taxable income above roughly $698,271 for single filers (with thresholds roughly doubled for married couples filing jointly). On top of that, an additional 1% Mental Health Services Tax applies to taxable income over $1,000,000, pushing the effective top marginal rate to 13.3%.

California's Standard Deduction Is Much Smaller

One of the biggest differences from federal taxes: California's standard deduction is far smaller — $5,540 for single filers and married filing separately, and $11,080 for married filing jointly and head of household for the 2025 tax year. That means a much larger share of your income becomes "taxable" at the state level compared to the federal calculation.

Federal + State, Side by Side

Enter your income once, and the calculator runs it through both the federal brackets (with your choice of standard deduction or itemized, and your choice of 2025 or 2026 federal figures) and the 2025 California brackets. The results panel shows federal tax, California tax, your combined effective tax rate, and your final take-home income after both.
